SPOKEN
Annabelle Binnerts
SPOKEN is the first solo-exhibition of Annabelle Binnerts at Galerie Martin van Zomeren.
Featuring several new series of works, the exhibition highlights the diverse facets of her language-
based artistic practice.
Already in its title, the exhibition examines the fluid nature of language: ‘spoken’ can be read across
both English and Dutch. In English, spoken suggests the act of speech, while in Dutch, the word
means ‘ghosts’ or ‘haunting’.This dual meaning beautifully resonates with the image of a word that,
once uttered, hangs elusively in the air - like a ghost floating between the one who said it, and the
one being spoken to.
The works in SPOKEN can all be viewed as an attempt to capture this elusive, ghost-like thing that
language is. Being immaterial themselves, words are always looking for a ‘body’: in the literal sense,
in the form of a mouth that speaks the words, or metaphorically: a book or page as a carrier or ‘body’
of words. Each of the works are a way to give a (visual) shape to language, words, and stories.
Ranging from enamels and textiles to site-specific murals, every piece explores a different aspect of
what it is to work with words. The exhibition invites viewers to consider reading not just as an act of
decoding, but as an immersive experience - like stepping through a door into a hidden world behind
the written words.
